Many executive leaders in healthcare report struggling to understand how to navigate issues related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI)—or what we call “humanity work.” This lack of preparation has leaders experiencing difficulty recruiting and retaining talent, driving strong and sustainable financial performance and creating cultures of belonging for all employees. Healthcare organizations’ efforts to build healthy communities—both internally and externally—are complicated further by issues within broader society, such as mental health crises, lack of access to healthcare and a variety of ongoing “-isms.”

Despite these challenges, leaders in healthcare can become frontrunners in the human-centered leadership needed to solve healthcare’s—and society’s—greatest problems. To have this impact, leaders must enhance their awareness, knowledge and skills as agents of change for humanity (i.e., DEI-centric change makers). This intentional leadership development is crucial for developing the confidence and skill needed to cultivate relationships, influence people and improve organizational culture.

In this interactive, dialogue-based workshop, participants will have opportunities to collaborate with facilitators and fellow participants to build a more robust “toolkit” of strategies to mitigate the negative impact bias in themselves, with others, and in their organizations and explore opportunities to humanize their leadership. Attendees will have ample opportunity to practice human-centric leadership skills, including having meaningful dialogue about “tough topics” in healthcare with fellow leaders.Drs. Ashley and Reuben invite participants to prepare for this experience by “coming as you are.”

Seminar Objectives:

  • Enhance awareness and understanding of implicit bias and how it can manifest in individual, interpersonal and institutional contexts.
  • Explore opportunities and obstacles unique to practicing DEI in healthcare.
  • Identify action steps to interrupt and reduce the negative impact of implicit bias.
  • Practice communication skills to enhance DEI-specific engagement and leadership skills.

Who Should Attend:

Managers and senior-level executives.
