Tackling Workforce Stressors, Transforming Operations and Strengthening Culture
The Miami Cancer Institute (MCI) at Baptist Health South Florida is a mission-driven institution bringing cutting-edge compassionate cancer treatment to the region. Rapid growth has been driven by the strategic recruitment of individual physicians from cancer institutes across the country—each arriving as an independent silo with its own expertise, staff, ways of working and culture.
Like many organizations making the transition from a startup to a more mature entity, MCI’s people and systems were struggling to keep pace. As entrepreneurial, hardworking staff tend to do, they found creative workarounds in a desperate attempt to keep up with the complexities of world-class cancer care. Structural barriers of a startup-focused organizational chart created many verticals in front-line operating units, challenged collaborative decision-making, and, at times, created friction between employees and operating units inconsistent with MCI and BHSF goals.
This session will share MCI’s experience and lessons learned from identifying the key stressors that most significantly impacted its people, patients and performance to creating and implementing transformational change that advanced operations through service line restructuring, strictly defining and measuring mission-critical activities to increase patient access and focus on strengthening employee engagement and institutional culture.
