Biography
Kathy Gerwig is the author of the book Greening Health Care, How Hospitals Can Heal the Planet, which examines the critical role healthcare organizations can play in addressing climate change and environmental threats to health.
Ms. Gerwig served in national executive roles during her 26-year tenure at Kaiser Permanente, Oakland, Calif. As vice president and environmental stewardship officer, Ms. Gerwig was responsible for the enterprise sustainability program. Under her leadership, Kaiser Permanente became widely recognized as an environmental leader, and in 2020, became the first U.S. health system to be carbon neutral for operations.
Today she is a pro bono senior advisor to Health Care Without Harm on climate and health, participates in the National Academy of Medicine Action Collaborative on Decarbonizing the Health Sector, and serves as vice chair of the board for the Center for Environmental Health.
