J. Stuart Showalter, JD, MFS, has developed a deep expertise in health law over a 45-year career. He began his career serving in the US Navy as in-house counsel to a large Navy medical center, as a malpractice claims defense attorney, and as counsel to the US Navy Surgeon General. Outside the military, Showalter served as vice president of the Catholic Health Association of the United States, as a partner in a St. Louis law firm, and as director of compliance for two multi-institutional health systems, first in Florida and later in Baton Rouge, LA. For many years Showalter taught health law and public policy in the health administration program at the Washington University School of Medicine, where he was twice named teacher of the year. He has also taught at the University of Central Florida, San Diego State University, and La Sierra University’s executive MBA program at Eisenhower Medical Center in Palm Springs, CA.
