Biography

Clifford E. Brubaker, PhD, is distinguished service professor and dean emeritus of the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences (SHRS) at the University of Pittsburgh. He was a professor and dean of SHRS for 24 years while also serving as a professor in the Departments of Neurological Surgery and Orthopedic Surgery of the University of Pittsburgh’s School of Medicine, McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine, and Clinical and Translational Science Institute. Dr. Brubaker holds adjunct appointments in the Robotics Institute of the School of Computer Science at Carnegie Mellon University and in the School of Life Science and Technology at Xi’an Jiaotong University in China. Prior to joining the University of Pittsburgh, he was professor at the University of Virginia for 18 years, with appointments in the School of Education and the Departments of Orthopedics and Biomedical Engineering in the schools of Medicine and Engineering, respectively. Dr. Brubaker received his doctorate from the University of Oregon, where for seven years he was assistant professor of health and physical education. He has been the principal investigator and coprincipal investigator for rehabilitation engineering centers at the University of Virginia and the University of Pittsburgh, working on research focused on wheelchair design and performance and seat cushion design for pressure relief. Dr. Brubaker holds six U.S. patents and has served on review panels for the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and the Institute of Medicine. He has led delegations to Moscow and Saint Petersburg, Russia, and hosted a reciprocal visit of engineers from Moscow’s Central Machine Building Institute on behalf of the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Human Rights and Humanitarian Affairs. Dr. Brubaker also has served as a consultant to institutions in the United States, China, and India.
