Addressing Barriers in Health Equity
Achieving equity in healthcare is vital, though addressing differences in outcomes across demographic groups remains a significant, common challenge. Despite efforts from stakeholders throughout the healthcare ecosystem, gaps persist that create disparate access to care, treatment and health outcomes.
In colorectal cancer screening, the barriers that make equity an ongoing challenge are multifaceted, covering factors such as social determinants of health as well as provider-driven behaviors. Many patients today overlook annual physicals and wellness checks—often only seeking medical attention for immediate needs like medication refills or employer requirements. According to the American Cancer Society, patients report that screening discussions are lacking, with only four in 10 recalling such conversations during their visit.
Exact Sciences, a leading provider of cancer screening and genomic testing, is dedicated to addressing these barriers and has made strides by screening more than 14 million people with the Cologuard® test and 1.5 million with the Oncotype DX Breast Recurrence Score® test. Tests like these exemplify the transformative potential of technology in advancing cancer screening and personalized care.
In the search of health equity, precision medicine and population health initiatives serve as powerful allies, offering novel approaches to address disparities and improve outcomes. Everyone has a role to play to get more people screened and to help eradicate cancer.
