With nearly 8 million incidents of medical harm each year and one in four hospitalizations resulting in an adverse event, patient safety remains among the greatest challenges facing healthcare. Now, artificial intelligence (AI) offers a part of a solution. AI can play a role in mitigating risks and improving healthcare outcomes to work toward safer, more equitable care delivery. By implementing predictive and generative AI technology, health systems can support clinical decision-making, uncover the underlying drivers of medical harm and automate tasks to relieve some of the administrative burden on clinicians. However, AI comes with its own challenges. Factors such as AI bias and errors can have catastrophic consequences if left unchecked and health systems must put checks and balances in place to mitigate the unintended consequences of AI.

In this webinar, chief patient safety and risk officer at RLDatix and vice president of scientific affairs at MedStar Health will discuss how AI can be used to improve patient safety, alleviate healthcare worker emotional exhaustion as well as the limitations of current technology.

Learning Objectives:

  • Explore the impact of healthcare technology and data on patient safety and emotional exhaustion among healthcare workers.
  • Share the benefits and challenges of leveraging AI in healthcare to drive safer care, improved efficiency and reduced administrative burden.
  • Examine the checks and balances that health systems must implement to mitigate the risks of AI.

Speakers:

Tim McDonald, MD, JD, Chief Patient Safety and Risk Officer, RLDatix

Raj Ratwani, PhD, MPH, Vice President of Scientific Affairs, MedStar Health Research Institute
