Beat Burnout and Build the Bottom Line: A New Path Forward

May 24, 2023 Webinar Recording
1 ACHE Qualifying Education credit

Hospitals and health systems are facing unprecedented staffing and financial challenges. For two years in a row, the annual ACHE survey of hospital leaders has placed workforce shortages/staffing issues, propelled by burnout, as their top concern followed closely by financial headwinds—neither of which show any indication of abating. Many hospitals have responded to widespread burnout by designating a chief wellness officer, forming a wellness committee or expanding their employee wellness offerings. While these are helpful gestures, they do not address its underlying causes. Burnout can be caused by issues in the workplace, not by clinicians’ lack of resilience.

The presenters—a nationally recognized expert on clinician burnout and a highly experienced healthcare CEO—delve into the drivers and manifestations of burnout; describe the changes that can retain and attract healthcare staff, especially clinicians; define the critical role senior leaders must play in addressing the underlying causes of burnout; and outline specific leadership practices that will simultaneously address burnout and improve financial performance.

Learning Objectives

  • Make the case for adopting a new purpose-driven leadership model that can reduce burnout, enhance staff retention and rebuild the bottom line.
  • Explain the relationship between the drivers and manifestations of burnout.
  • Provide a roadmap to transform clinician-senior leader relationships, positioning your clinicians and your organization for success.
