Leading Effectively in Conflict - Mindful and Relational Strategies

1 ACHE Qualifying Education credit

Conflict is normal within teams and provides an opportunity for creativity and growth. Approaching challenges and differences with mindfulness will empower us as leaders to engage effectively. We will explore the five fundamental conflict engagement styles and the relative benefits of each, supporting participants in determining their default style. Participants are encouraged to bring a conflictual case from their own work to practice applying a mindfulness approach. We will explore the ARTful (Ask-Respond-Tell) strategy of conflict engagement through humble inquiry, empathic reflection and sharing our own perspectives with a focus on shared goals.

  • Describe five fundamental conflict styles and the relative benefits of each, with an awareness of one’s own default style of conflict engagement.
  • Apply a framework of mindfulness in conflict to a recent case at work.
  • Explain how to ARTfully approach conflict systematically with an Ask (humble inquiry), a Response (empathic reflection) and a Telling (sharing your perspective).
