Maintaining a Culture of Safety: Difficult Conversations

1 ACHE Qualifying Education credit

ACHE created the Digital Safety Courses as part of our ongoing effort to provide healthcare leaders with the tools and resources needed to lead for safety. The publication Leading a Culture of Safety: A Blueprint for Success was used as the framework for these courses. The Blueprint is a joint effort from ACHE and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement/National Patient Safety Foundation Lucian Leape Institute.

This course will focus on the competencies and knowledge required to address the core leadership challenge of maintaining a culture of safety while under the pressure of the most difficult conversations. Participants will examine scenarios that demonstrate the application of the just culture algorithm during difficult conversations within a healthcare organization. Course attendees can look forward to reflective learning though simulations, activities, and opportunities for feedback and discussion. Upon completion of the course, safety champions and leaders will have information, resources, tools and metrics for success to share with their teams at foundational and sustaining levels.

ACHE wishes to acknowledge the following contributors to the course: Susan Teman, Senior Manager, Strategic Consulting, Press Ganey, and M. Michael Shabot, MD, Founder Partner, Relia Healthcare Advisors.

Learning Objectives:

  • Assess when to implement the just culture algorithm.
  • Demonstrate the ability to publicly reward positive examples of just culture during difficult conversations.
  • Apply a standardized approach to difficult conversations around professional behavior concerns.

Target Audience:

  • Safety champions (department head, director, new VPs), clinical leaders (RNs, MDs, etc.), all levels of leadership and the organization’s Board.
