  • Karma H. Bass, FACHE

    <p>For more than 20 years, Karma Bass has been a sought-after speaker, facilitator and consultant with deep knowledge and experience in governance, strategic planning, philanthropy, healthcare policy and board effectiveness. Her experience gives her a unique and valuable perspective as a consultant to hospital and health systems boards.</p> <p>Before co-founding Via Healthcare Consulting, Karma worked as vice president for Accord Limited, a Chicago-based consulting firm. She served two years as president/CEO of Alliance Healthcare Foundation in San Diego, where she reported to an independent, 11-person not-for-profit board. Notably, Karma spent 10 years at The Governance Institute, holding various positions including vice president of membership services and director of research and publications. She also oversaw the prestigious biennial hospital governance practices survey tracking trends in nearly 5,000 U.S. hospitals and health systems. During three years at the Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties, Karma facilitated the first-ever collaborative community health needs assessment for San Diego&#8217;s 32 hospitals. </p> <p>Karma has a master&#8217;s degree in public health with a focus in health services administration from San Diego State University. She received her bachelor&#8217;s degree from the University of California, San Diego.</p>

  • Laurie K. Baedke, FACHE

    <p>Laurie Baedke is a faculty member and director of healthcare leadership programs at Creighton University. A well-regarded speaker and author with broad experience building companies and leading organizational change, Ms. Baedke has specific expertise in healthcare management, emotional intelligence and strengths-based leadership. She is an active mentor and adviser to senior executives, physician leaders, early careerists and entrepreneurs. She also hosts the weekly podcast &#8220;The Growth Edge Leadership Podcast.&#8221; Ms. Baedke holds a bachelor&#8217;s degree in human services and business administration and a master&#8217;s degree in healthcare administration. She is a board-certified Fellow of the American College of Medical Practice Executives. She has been a Gallup-Certified Strengths Coach since 2006. Ms. Baedke has received numerous awards. She has served on four national committees for ACHE and is a current member of the ACHE of Nebraska and Western Iowa Chapter board of directors. She also serves on various civic and community organizations&#8217; boards and committees. Ms. Baedke holds dual faculty appointments at Creighton University&#8217;s Heider College of Business and School of Medicine, where she serves as director of the Executive Healthcare MBA program. Her first book, <em>The Emerging Healthcare Leader: A Field Guide</em>, was published by ACHE&#8217;s Health Administration Press in 2015, and a second edition was published in 2018.   • Michael Gitman, MD

    <p>Michael Gitman, MD, FACP, is medical director, North Shore University Hospital. He is the chief physician executive responsible for medical affairs and clinical operations of the 800-bed quaternary care hospital. His responsibilities include day-to-day executive management, medical affairs, quality management and patient safety efforts.</p> <p> Previously, Dr. Gitman served as the vice chairman for academic affairs and quality, Department of Medicine, of the former North Shore&#8211;Long Island Jewish Medical Center. During that time, he held multiple committee roles including chair of the LIJ medication safety committee and chair of the Department of Medicine performance improvement coordination group.</p> <p> Dr. Gitman is associate professor of medicine at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. Over the past decade, he has been extensively involved in physician education. He served as program director for the North Shore University Hospital nephrology fellowship and as the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Long Island Jewish Medical Center Internal Medicine Clerkship site director.</p> <p> Dr. Gitman received a bachelor&#8217;s degree from Columbia University and a medical degree from SUNY Health Science Center at Syracuse, where he was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society. He completed a residency and chief residency in internal medicine, as well as a fellowship in nephrology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City.</p>

  • Attila J. Hertelendy, PhD

    <p>Attila Hertelendy, PhD, has over 28 years of leadership experience as a hospital administrator and executive in the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Canada. He has an extensive background in emergency and disaster management and digital health. He is a frequent international keynote speaker on crisis leadership, disaster and emergency management, global health security, climate change, disaster informatics and digital health.</p> <p>At Florida International University, Hertelendy is an associate professor in the College of Business and has a secondary appointment at the Wertheim College of Medicine. He teaches leadership, organizational behavior and management of healthcare. He is also an adjunct associate professor at the Mailman School of Public Health, Columbia University. He is the director of the Middle East hub for the Global Consortium on Climate and Health Education.</p> <p>Hertelendy is the co-research director for the Disaster Medicine Fellowship and faculty at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Harvard Medical School Teaching Hospital. His research interests explore healthcare resiliency and the intersection between climate change, health and disaster medicine. He studies the health implications of climate change and how technology can be used to improve both the delivery and sustainability of healthcare during disasters.</p> <p>He is the author of more than 100 published articles and numerous book chapters. He also serves as the deputy editor for <em>Disaster Medicine and Public Health</em> and associate editor for the <em>Journal of Emergency Management</em>. He ison the editorial board for the <em>Journal of Climate Change and Health</em>. </p>

  • William F. Martin, PsyD

    <p>Marty Martin serves as professor in the Driehaus College of Business at DePaul University. In this role, he has launched several graduate degree programs, from a Master of Business Administration/Master of Science degree program with Rush University to a Master of Science degree program in health informatics. Dr. Martin has written more than 100 refereed journal articles and two books. His scholarly work has been featured by <em>USA Today</em>, <em>The Wall Street Journal </em>and <em>The Washington Post</em>. Prior to this role, he served as director of diversity at The Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore and later as senior executive for institutional diversity at DePaul University. Earlier in his career, Dr. Martin worked at AT&amp;T in health affairs, at The National Institutes of Health and at Tulane University Hospital &amp; Clinic. He continues to focus on diversity, equity and inclusion but with an emphasis on anti-racism and implicit bias coaching and training. Dr. Martin currently serves on several boards, including the Center for Health Innovation, and is involved in the digital health startup ecosystem in Chicago. In 2019, he launched his own digital sleep health platform. Dr. Martin also coaches clients on practicing mindful leadership, achieving performance optimization by syncing their schedule with their chronotype, and managing internal and external distractions.   • Michael A. Mayo, DHA, FACHE

    <p>Michael A. Mayo, DHA, FACHE, is president and CEO of Baptist Health. Mayo has more than 32 years of health executive experience, including his previous role as Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville hospital president.</p> <p>As CEO, he oversees five hospitals: Baptist Medical Center Jacksonville, Baptist Medical Center South, Baptist Medical Center Beaches, Baptist Medical Center Nassau and Wolfson Children's Hospital, along with four satellite emergency centers, 55 primary care offices, more than 13,000 team members and 1,762 physicians.</p> <p>During his career, Mayo has served as CEO of Orange Park Medical Center, Frankfort Regional Medical Center and Memorial Hospital Jacksonville as well as president of Methodist Dallas Medical Center, a Level I Trauma Center and the flagship facility of the Methodist Health System. From 1989 to 1999, Mayo held progressive leadership positions with Baptist Health System of Birmingham, Ala., where he first joined as an administrative fellow. </p> <p>Mayo earned his Doctor of Health Administration from the Medical University of South Carolina, his Master of Science in health care administration from Texas Woman&#8217;s University and his Bachelor of Science in human resource management from the University of Alabama. He is board certified in healthcare management as a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. From 2019 to 2022, he served on ACHE&#8217;s Board of Governors. Mayo has also served ACHE as the Regent for Florida&#8212;Northern and Western, and as a member of the <em>Healthcare Executive</em> Editorial Board and Regents Advisory Council.</p> <p> Mayo serves in various community leadership positions, including chairman of the University of North Florida Healthcare Administration Advisory Board and adjunct professor, Master of Health Administration program at UNF Brooks College of Health.</p>

  • David L. Schreiner, PhD, FACHE

    <p>David L. Schreiner, PhD, FACHE, is president/CEO, Katherine Shaw Bethea Hospital, Dixon, Ill. He is a passionate advocate for rural hospitals, having spent most of his life in small towns and working in small communities.</p> <p>Schreiner considers himself a values-driven leader who lives in the moment, has an unquenchable thirst for continual learning, challenges existing practices, produces positive results, innovates to improve the lives of others and loves unconditionally. He aims to be a missionary for excellent health and vibrant communities and spread love through generosity and healing. His research focuses on improving the health of others, with a particular emphasis on rural communities.</p> <p>From 2016 to 2019, Schreiner served on ACHE&#8217;s Board of Governors. He is also the past chairman of the American Hospital Association Rural Health Task Force. He was the 2007 Dixon, Illinois Citizen of the Year and received the 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award from the University of St. Francis College of Business.</p> <p>His first book, <em>Be the Best Part of Their Day: Supercharging Communication with Values-Driven Leadership</em>, will be available January 2024.</p>

  • Jonathan A. Sendach, FACHE

    <p>Jonathan A. Sendach, FACHE, is the executive director at North Shore University Hospital where he oversees the overall executive management for the 800-bed quaternary care hospital. His responsibilities include strategy, financial stewardship and leadership of a facility that serves as one of the cornerstones of Northwell Health, as well as an academic campus for the Zucker Hofstra/Northwell School of Medicine. Prior to being named executive director, he served as deputy executive director and associate executive director for hospital operations. </p> <p>Previously, Sendach was the associate executive director for finance at Glen Cove Hospital, a 265-bed acute care community hospital. There, he managed financial operations, patient financial services and health information management, as well as directed the annual budget process. In addition to business plan development and financial planning, he was also responsible for the oversight of the hospital&#8217;s faculty practice, comprised of 40 physicians and allied health professionals covering a range of specialties. He began his career in healthcare at Northwell as a staff emergency medical technician, working in both the 911 and critical care interfacility transport divisions. </p> <p>Prior to joining Northwell Health, Sendach worked as a senior account executive in the New York health and medical practice at Ogilvy Public Relations Worldwide, an international public relations firm serving a range of clients. He worked on publicity campaigns for products from Pfizer Inc., Merck &amp; Co. and AstraZeneca. Sendach began his career in public relations at the New York City offices of The Rowland Company, where he worked with the healthcare team and served as a co-director of the summer intern training program. </p> <p>Board certified in healthcare management as an ACHE Fellow, Sendach holds a bachelor&#8217;s degree from Colgate University and a Master of Public Administration from the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service at New York University, where he holds an appointment as adjunct associate professor of health policy and management. He completed a residency in healthcare administration at the corporate offices of Northwell Health, then known as the North Shore&#8211;Long Island Jewish Health System in Great Neck, N.Y.</p>
