Volunteer Activity Requirement

 

Contributing to the industry and one’s local community has been a hallmark of ACHE since its foundation. Healthcare leaders should be part of their communities in order to grow in their leadership positions and understand the needs of the communities they serve.

You must demonstrate participation in two healthcare-related volunteer activities and two community/civic volunteer activities within the three years prior to submitting an application for Fellow or recertification. When entering each activity, please provide a brief description of the organization and nature of the support you provided.

There is no minimum time requirement for each activity and a wide variety of volunteer activities are accepted. Additionally, you must not be compensated for your time or service, and it must not be part of your role/responsibility in your profession.

Below are some examples of acceptable volunteer activities, both healthcare-related and community/civic:

Healthcare-related activities may include:

  • Service as an officer or committee member of an association, professional society or other healthcare group (one year of service = one activity)
  • Volunteering at clinics or other health agencies
  • Organizing a community health fair
  • Volunteering or participating in a blood drive or awareness walk
  • Speaking at a workshop or to a group on healthcare-related issues
  • Mentoring/coaching, specifically focused on the field of healthcare management and administration
  • Facilitating and/or teaching a study group and/or study course on healthcare management and administration
  • Publishing articles, chapters or books written on healthcare management and administration topics

Community/civic activities may include:

  • Service as an officer or committee member of a local school or community board (one year of service = one activity)
  • Participation with charitable or religious organizations
  • Serving on local school or community boards
  • Participating in fundraising events
  • Coaching a sports team
  • Involvement with your local 4-H or scouting troop
