Entry-Level Management Positions in Acute Care

Position Titles

Managers; analysts in finance, marketing, and operations; coordinators for projects or patient safety; planners; administrative fellows or residents

Primary Responsibilities

  • Aid in analyzing and planning hospital operations.
  • Conduct or participate in project management activities such as strategic planning, business development, quality improvement, compliance, financial analysis, and organizational development.

Qualifications

Typically, a master’s degree in healthcare administration or business administration—along with 1-2 years of work experience in a healthcare organization—is required. Experience requirements are usually waived for administrative fellows and residents who are just embarking on a healthcare management career. These individuals may have completed the didactic portion of their healthcare management graduate program and are seeking experience in a healthcare setting, or they may have already received their master’s degree and are exploring various opportunities to gain practical management and leadership experience in a healthcare environment.

  • Ability to work well with others and plan projects
  • Efficient time management skills
  • Problem-solving skills combined with an appreciation of the broad organizational context
  • Knowledge of the regulatory expectations of the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations
  • Knowledge of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act regulations as well as Medicare and Medicaid regulations
  • Graduate-level knowledge of management theory and practice, including financial management

Salaries for entry-level management positions in acute care typically range from $40,000 to $60,000.

An entry-level manager can expect to work approximately 51-55 hours per week.
