Logistics, Compensation and Benefits

Another key consideration in developing a Fellowship is determining the physical, financial and administrative resources that will be committed to supporting a fellow.

  1. Logistics
  2. Compensation
  3. Benefits

Logistics

Typically the fellow's "organizational home" for budgeting and support purposes is the organization's executive office. However, a fellow might be physically located in another department, particularly if there is a secondary preceptor located in that department. While fellows are provided with computers and other office technology, as well as appropriate access to organizational information systems, they typically are expected to produce their own work products rather than rely on executive office support staff.

Compensation

An ACHE survey of administrative fellows in early 2010 found that fellows earned a median salary of $49,800 per year, with three-fourths of the fellows earning between $45,000 and $60,000 per year. In terms of compensation and benefits, the package can be the same as offered to full-time employees. As such it includes health benefits, retirement savings contributions and PTO accumulation.

Organizations typically pay for prospective fellows' interview expenses, as well as support for moving expenses for the individual who is selected.

Benefits

Most programs also provide support for the fellow's involvement in professional development and continuing education, paying expenses for the fellow to attend educational conferences and additional learning opportunities.
