Improving Caregiver Experience: The Employee Perspective on Healthcare Workspaces

Workforce challenges were ranked as the top issue in ACHE’s annual Top Issues Confronting Hospitals Survey two years in a row. Attraction and retention of quality caregivers, support and administrative staff are crucial in providing the best patient care for any healthcare organization and facilities and real estate play an important role in supporting this mission. In a new survey JLL conducted of over 1,000 healthcare workers, 93% of those who plan to stay in their roles believed their workplace was designed so that they could work efficiently, while only 74% of those considering leaving agreed.

In this webinar, JLL Healthcare’s managing director and senior research manager will share how the physical workplace contributes to healthcare employee experience and intent to stay.

Building on surveys and learnings from healthcare workers, administrative employees, real estate leaders as well as clinical and office environments, this session will explore how workspaces can contribute to corporate goals and support your healthcare organization’s mission while cultivating positive spaces for employees. Also, learn how employers can focus on employee wellbeing and improve attraction, employee satisfaction, retention and experience by improving physical spaces. Finally, uncover how to improve aspects of the physical location related to safety, community, convenience and the fluency of care delivery.

Healing in More Ways Than One

Sustainability in healthcare is no longer about watchful waiting. It has evolved into a critical strategic matter with profound implications for climate and public health. With climate change posing a grave health threat, healthcare leaders are recognizing the urgency for sustainable practices. The stakes are high—not only for the climate, but for patient care and operational performance.

With health system facilities responsible for 8.5% of the nation’s carbon emissions, the healthcare sector can play a front-line role in combating climate change. Looking at the global picture of emissions, U.S. healthcare has an outsized opportunity to help meet reduction goals. According to a Health Care Without Harm report, the nation’s health sector is the world’s leading emitter, producing, for example, 57 times more emissions per person than India.

Tapping Healthcare Real Estate's Potential

With all the challenges on healthcare executives’ minds, real estate doesn’t often rise to the top of a list of possible solutions. But healthcare leaders might want to take another look: Strategic opportunities exist within healthcare real estate that can improve patient care and experience, maximize efficiency and reduce operating costs. In fact, at a time when many healthcare organizations are facing aging infrastructures—and scarce resources—reviewing their real estate portfolios could unveil untapped potential. “Conducting regular portfolio assessments and evaluating the spaces that you and your caregivers, patients and communities are cared for in can help you identify opportunities for consolidation, space redevelopment, cost reduction and freeing up capital for patient care investments,” says Alison Flynn Gaffney, FACHE, president, Healthcare Division, JLL.
