Scaling a Patient-Centric Shared Decision-Making Program Across the Network to Improve Colorectal Cancer Screening Rates

National colorectal cancer (CRC) screening guidelines have recommended offering patients choice for more than five years. Experts from the American Cancer Society and U.S. Preventive Services Task Force agree that increasing overall CRC screening rates can be achieved by including patients in the decision-making process. In February 2022, Beth Israel Lahey Health identified an opportunity to pilot a patient-centric shared decision-making project to engage patients in their healthcare, improve screening rates and help alleviate burdens on providers who were faced with a significant colonoscopy backlog. Tim Carey, project manager, Beth Israel Lahey Health Performance Network, will discuss how to launch a shared decision-making pilot program and the supportive role of external collaborators to drive success. Carey will also explain the opportunities of EHR optimizations and how to measure and scale across a broad network of health systems brought together by mergers and acquisitions integrations.
