    Advice needed

I recently completed MBA in Healthcare/Services Management. I am currently with U.S. Army working as acquisition manager. The only healthcare experience I have was when I worked four years as medical supply manager. I intend to get out of the Army in 2013 and would like to know if I stand the chance of getting a job in healthcare sector.

My first suggestion is that you attend the ACHE Congress program on "Transitioning from Military to Civilian Heatlhcare". This is an excellent session that will cover many important questions about your transition.  If you are not attending Congress, contact me at mbroscio@ache.org for a copy of the presentation. Given the limited amount of experience, you will need to optimize the supply/procurement/purchasing work you have done and the healthcare coursework in your MBA.  If there is any time to volunteer in a healthcare setting, it certainly wouldn't hurt and would demonstrate your committment to the field.  If may be that you need to look at supply/procurement/purchasing related jobs in a hospital setting as an entry point, given that you have some knowledge of that area.

Networking is vitally important and you may want to connect with those who have made a successful transition from the military.  You can also participate in the ACHE Career Management Network which is a free service for affiliates and contains those who have made successful moves.  You will find this on our website.  Mike Broscio - ACHE Healthcare Executive Career Resource Center.
