    What degree to pursue?

I will be completing my bachelors degree in Healthcare Administration in December 2010 and I am looking into pursuing my Masters degree and would like some advise on the type of Masters program that would be most beneficial.  I would like to work within the IS department as that is what I am good at, but I also don't want to limit myself.  There are many duel degree that are offered through the University of Michigan and I am not sure if a degree in Business Administration/Public Policy or MHSA/MPP or MPP/MIS, there is just so much to choose from and as we all know the expense is not minimal and therefore I would to make the most desirable for employers.  Thank you in advance for any advise you can give.

    Re: What degree to pursue?

    Hi, Heidi,

The best person to answer this question would be Dr, Reed Morton, FACHE, CJSS, who heads up ACHE's Career Services division. Unfortunately, Dr. Morton is out of the office until next week. He'll respond to your post as soon as he returns.

    Thank you,

     Heidi,

You will find a discussion of the which degree queston on ache.org at  http://www.ache.org/CARSVCS/whichdegree.cfm.  Notwithstanding its content, please consider the following suggestion.

Perhaps you should focus now on what healthcare management type job you might take immediately following completion of your bachelor's degree and before going on for a master's degree. You can discover what work is or is not your passion and thereby rule in or rule out some of the many options you see out there awaiting you.  Also, you will enhance your employability in the future by adding experience and accomplishments to your resume to go with your educational credential(s).  Finally, you just might find an employer that offers tuition benefits for advanced study and that would be a considerable win-win for you to enjoy.

ACHE ofers a Career Anchors assessment that may help resolve for you what it is you would value doing most.  See information on this at  http://www.ache.org/CARSVCS/CarAnchor.cfm.
