    Hospital Start Up

I am working on starting up a new hospital.  We are currently in our funding phase.  I am looking for any training or resources on starting up new hospitals.  I have been in several moves as a hospital leaders, but haven't started one from the ground up yet.

ACHE has a number of resources that may be of interest to you.

If you are looking for resources to assist in facility design and construction, ACHE offers a seminar titled "Managing Healthcare Facility Design and Construction Programs." This seminar will be offered at our upcoming Baltimore Cluster, October 5-8, 2009, and our Beaver Creek Cluster, January 25-28, 2010.

Health Administration Press also offers a number of books on healthcare facility design and construction. Improving Healthcare with Better Building Design and Healthcare Facility Planning: Thinking Strategically are just a few of the available titles.

Healthcare Executive magazine has also included a number of articles on new hospital construction. An article titled "Creating the Ultimate Healing Environment: Integrating Evidence-Based Design, IT and Patient Safety" ran in the Sept/Oct '08 issue, and a number of articles on incorporating green (sustainable) initiatives into building design were included in the May/June '09 issue.

Outside of ACHE, The Center for Health Design would be a great resource. They are hosting the Healthcare Design.09 conference from October 31 - November 3, 2009 in Orlando. The Healthcare Facilities Symposium & Expo is also being held September 30 - October 2 in Chicago.

     Hope this helps!

Those are great resounces, thank you!

Also looking for more info on timeline or mile stones in opening a brand new hospital (non-design related).  For example, at 24 months out from opening date you need to have the hospital President in place, at 23 months you need to have x in place.  Also ideas on how to build a staff that is ready to start on opening day - how do you stage that.

    Re: Hospital Start Up

You need to be sure that your administration team is on board. Your hospital President should be in place no later than 12months, VPs 6-8 months, Adm. assitance 6 months, material manager 6 months, department managers and directors probably 4 months and staff 3 months.

This is pending if you already have a team to assist for orientating, developing policy and procedures, service contracts in place, credentialing approval.  Remember everything have to in place before the DOH comes in for your occupancy survey.

Hope this helps for your timeline.

    Good Luck.
