    Contract negotiations with payers

I just started a new job three weeks ago with an organization that started operations in June 2009.  The services provided at the facility are radiation and medical oncology. The previous administrator did not negotiate any contracts with any of the hospitals in the area.  I don’t have any experience in contract negotitations with payers and I don’t know where to start.  Does anyone know of any books or resources that could help me understand healthcare payer contract negotiations?.

    Re: Contract negotiations with payers

ACHE does have a few resources on negotiating. While these are not specific to payer contract negotiations, they may provide an important framework:

-"Process and Technique of Negotiating," a seminar offered at our Orlando Cluster, Dec. 14-17, and our Las Vegas Cluster, Feb. 8-11.

-Mastering the Negotiation Process: A Practical Guide for the Healthcare Executive," a book published by Health Administration Press.

    Hope this helps!
