    advice needed

I completed my BS in Health Care Management.  I am looking for a job which fits my degree. I do not have any experience in healthcare yet but I do have experience in financial management. While I was doing my BS, I took a minor in accounting. I have worked for ten years in accounting. I am taking Health Care risk management course on line in order to learn more about Risks management in hospitals.

My question is that "Do you think, I did the right decision on taking on line course while I am waiting for opportunuities to come?"

    Thank you

I am in the process of completeing my BSHS w/ a Healthcare concentration and I think you made a good choice taking this extra course.  I don't see how it could hurt you in anyway.  In the end you are gaining more knowledge that you can utilize.

    Re: advice needed

My concern is that you don't seem to have quite nailed down what job would best fit your education and background - you clearly have experience in Accounting yet you are taking a risk management course. I don't think expanding your knowledge is ever a bad thing, but make sure you are able to clearly enumerate what the ideal position is for you and then seek those types of positions out. "Waiting for opportunities to come" is a very passive statement, one that won't get you a job. I recommend you seek out your local ACHE chapter members for further advice, and better define what it is you are looking for. They will also be able to point to towards organizations that may fit your needs, and may even have some leads for you.

I wasn't able to pull up anything about your work history on ACHE, so I can't give you much more specific advice than that. Good luck!

    Re: advice needed

Hi.  My name is Rob Hancock, Director of Service Initiatives at Pekin Hospital in Pekin, IL.  I have been in healthcare for 26 years and I do not believe you have wasted any time at all.  One of the questions asked in an interview is often "What have you done lately to further your education or personal growth?" and you have a good answer.

You may not wish to be in accounting any more and that is fine.  I have seen many openings in healthcare in the finance and accounting area and I believe it is a good place to "get in".  Once you are there you will become aware of other openings in the organizatin as time goes by and you will have an "in" with your own organization.

    Good Luck!
